In this talk, I present results from a systematic study of loanwords across 39 Northeastern Neo-Aramaic (NENA) dialects, which I carried out with the help of Masoud Mohammadirad and using additional data collected by Geoffrey Khan. We studied 375 relatively basic meanings across NENA dialects based on clustering, community, semantic fields, and word classes, amounting to ca. 15,650 words. To what extent are these borrowings random? Which meanings are more borrowable than others?  Which dialects/communities borrow more than others? The findings indicate that both robust cross-linguistic tendencies and cluster-and-community-specific factors best account for the distribution of loanwords. Moreover, despite its minority status, Neo-Aramaic can be at most classified as an average borrower language in terms of its borrowing of basic vocabulary. Some basic items from the fields of the human body, kinship, sense perception and emotion and values, however, show an unexpectedly high rate of borrowing.
