This study examines secondary pausal phenomena in modern oral recitation traditions of Biblical Hebrew, focusing on final nasalisation and diphthongisation. Its primary objective is to document and demonstrate the empirical data on which the analysis is based. Drawing on recordings from the Hebrew University Language Traditions Project, it shows that these phenomena are attested across a wide range of traditions spanning from Libya to Kurdistan and argues for their linguistic significance. The study demonstrates that the pausal forms cannot be satisfactorily explained by influence from the speakers’ vernacular languages, since comparable strategies are largely absent or structurally different in those languages. Instead, the analysis situates the modern data within a broader historical and typological framework and proposes two possible perspectives: typological parallels with nasalisation attested in Rabbinic Hebrew, and a phonetic interpretation of these forms as a sonority-decreasing strategy for reinforcing phrase-final vowels.
