TALK: Islamic Mirror and Interreligious Matrix: The Kalīla wa-Dimna — B. Gruendler

26.06.2026

Within the lecture series “Religious Communities and Manuscript Cultures on the Medieval Silk Road” (Excellence Cluster EurAsian Transformations, University of Vienna), by invitation of Prof. Claudia Rapp and Dr. Adrian Pirtea

The lecture series brings together experts and scholars working on various religious traditions (Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam) in connection with manuscript cultures along the Silk Road and across the broader Eurasian space. Particular attention is given to transitions, intersections, and points of contact between these traditions, as mediated through manuscripts and texts.

On 26 June, Beatrice Gruendler delivers a talk Islamic Mirror and Interreligious Matrix: The Kalīla wa-Dimna.

Kalīla wa Dimna, with its dual focus on ethics and pragmatics and without a fixed ideological framework, remains a versatile vehicle for religious ideas that subsequent redactors and translators appropriate and adapt to their own contexts and audiences.
