Joudy Sido Bozan gives a workshop Arabic Studies×NLP: Sprache, Macht und Methode. The workshop provides an introduction into fundamental methods of natural language processing (NLP) for Arabic texts and links these to research questions from the fields of Arabic studies and the Digital Humanities. It focuses on both the technical approaches (e.g., tokenization, annotation, and automatic analysis) and their contextualization and critical reflection within the discipline. Common challenges such as ambiguity, diglossia, dialect diversity, and orthographic variation are demonstrated based on contemporary and historical Arabic texts. The aim of this workshop is to discuss NLP not only as a technical functionality, but also in means of methodological and epistemic challenges for research in the humanities.
