Aristotle's Poetics in the West (of India) from Antiquity to the Renaissance – A Multilingual Edition, with Studies of the Cultural Contexts, of the Syriac, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin Translations

D. Gutas is Professor emeritus for Arabic and Islamic Studies, and Greco-Arabic Studies, at Yale University, and a leading scholar in his field. Among his publications are Greek Thought, Arabic Culture: The Graeco-Arabic Translation Movement in Baghdad and Early ʻAbbāsid Society (1998), and the first editio maior of the Greek text of Aristotle’s Poetics (Leiden 2012) in collaboration with Leonardo Tarán.

Gutas has laid the ground for the field of Graeco-Arabic studies with his own instrumental publications. Experienced in the difficulties posed by the transfer of concepts from one language to another, and more importantly, from one culture to another, he co-founded with Gerhard Endress of Bochum University A Greek and Arabic Lexicon (Leiden 1992-, 2 vols. in
12 fascicles to date), based on actual texts. This placed the study of such translations on a new scholarly basis.

Gutas is a scholar of foundations. He completed a handbook on the technique of editing classical Arabic texts, i.e. how to present their entire textual history as preserved in the multiple manuscripts of one work and their interrelationships. No such tool existed before, despite the sore need for it in the face of over a million of unedited Arabic manuscripts

Gutas’s hallmarks are philological precision and textcritical acumen as evident from his edited works. In a collective project with classical scholars he edited and translated the Greek, Latin, and Arabic fragments of Aristotle's student and successor, Theophrastus (2 vols. Leiden 1992, with numerous commentary volumes). He then prepared the first critical
edition of the Greek text of Theophastus's On First Principles, using the medieval Arabic and Latin translations, and edited its Arabic translation as well (Leiden 2010). He explains this multi-lingual method in an Excursus. This is the first time that a single scholar has edited simultaneously both a classical Greek text and its Arabic translation and has thus set a standard and paved the way for future classical studies. Gutas further produced the first critical editio maior of the Greek version of Aristotle’s Poetics together with Leonardo Taran of Columbia University, New York (Leiden 2012) and used the Syriac/Arabic translation as a corrective.

Above all, Gutas has changed the way we look at and study the scientific and philosophical tradition in Islam. He disproved the received opinion of Arab-Islamic culture as being a mere repository of Greek thought, to be returned to Europe for further development. His foundational work on the major Aristotelian philosopher Avicenna (Leiden 1988; revised and augmented edition, Leiden 2014, selected for the World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran) shows how this Islamic philosopher critiqued and developed Aristotle’s thought to create a system that dominated Islamic and European philosophy for centuries. Through this and other works on Avicenna, Gutas has opened new avenues for
productive research in Arabic philosophy now followed by the majority of the younger generation of scholars.

Gutas has done pioneering work in the social history of early Islamic society. He asks the question why Muslims placed such importance on Greek science to begin with, which made them translate the entire available Greek corpus into Arabic. Revising the prevailing view that such was a sporadic activity of Eastern Christian clerics (who knew both Greek and Arabic), Gutas has established, in his book on the subject, Greek Thought, Arabic Culture (London and New York 1998), that the process was an Islamic government enterprise which was part of a new cosmopolitan ruler ideology. The book shows cultural translation to be an active process. It is acclaimed worldwide and was translated into eight languages. Gutas’s sociohistorical model of translation explains similar processes of translation in other periods and cultures. Harvard University Press has commissioned him to devote a monograph on all pre-Renaissance translations (a first sketch appears in the journal Intellectual History of the Islamicate World.)
