The Special Hanmun Workshop is open to all students who are interested in hanmun studies. The purpose of the three lectures held on Monday 22^nd of June 2026 is to introduce traditional Korean sources written in hanmun as well as to offer a reading session on classical texts under the guidance of the foremost Korean specialists from the Academy of Korean Studies. The lectures are designed both for advanced students and beginners.

Lecturers

Dr. Chang-il Lee

Chang-il Lee is engaged in research on ancient texts at the Jang-seo-gak(藏書閣, Library) of the Academy of Korean Studies. His major field of study is Chinese philosophy, and he earned his Ph.D. with a dissertation on the I Ching. His primary research interests include elucidating the nature of East Asian natural philosophy, which forms the backdrop of the I Ching, and understanding the I Ching from the perspective of the history of ideas. His recent research focuses on the traditions of Korean philosophy and their contemporary significance. His publications include “Research on Jeong Yak-yong’s Interpretation of the I Ching(Book of Changes) in the History of the Confucian Classics”(2024); “The Discovery of Choe Han-gi’s Tong-gyeong and Its Scholarly Significance”(2024); Shame: The Minds of Humans and Monsters (2021); and The People and Great Harmony (2021). 

Dr. Wonyoung Heo

Wonyoung Heo is a researcher of Korean socio-economic history spanning from the late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period. In 2006, he earned his Ph.D. with the dissertation The Population and Household and the Management of Taxation of Jeju Island in the 19th Century, which analyzed household registers. He primarily conducts micro-historical research using old documents, focusing on the lives of peasants within the context of their relationships with the state and the Yangban landlord class. His published works include Economic Activities of Yangban Landlords in Korea’s Modern Transition Period (2022).

Dr. Hyejung Lee

Lee Hyejung is a researcher at the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies. She is interested in the distribution process of books, royal library, and catalogue of the old books in the Joseon period. She received Ph.D. in 2019 for the thesis on “Study on Catalogue of Books in Jibokjae” at the Academy of Korean Studies.
