anschließend in Deutsch.

Over the past 20 years, the emergence of vibrant contemporary art scenes
in Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as the international careers of
artists such as Ai Weiwei, Yinka Shonibare or Doris Salcedo, have brought
formerly peripheral locations to the attention of the international art
world and given rise to a powerful globalized art market.
Exhibition venues and institutions in Europe and North America were quick
to respond to this trend: they successfully organized a stream of survey
exhibitions, designed to introduce emerging "non-western" art scenes to
Western audiences. Many of these regional exhibitions received rave
reviews and have had a decisive impact on the canonization of previously
unknown works and artists.

Rarely, however, have the curatorial processes been questioned that led to
these exhibitions: What were (and are) the criteria for choosing specific
works of art, inviting specific artists? How did (and do) cultural
assumptions guide or distort the process of transcultural representation?
What are the unique chances, and what the limitations of a regionalized
perspective on art in today's globally interconnected world?

The House of World Cultures (HKW) in Berlin was one of the first
institutions that spearheaded the western engagement with contemporary
global art from Asia, Africa and Latin America. In her talk, Dr. Annette
Bhagwati, programme coordinator and in-house curator for exhibitions at
the HKW from 2000-2006, and currently adjunct professor of contemporary
art history at Concordia University Montréal, will retrace and unravel the
curatorial decision processes that led to several high-profile survey
exhibitions of contemporary art from China, India and South-East Asia at
the HKW - and critically examine these processes in the light of current
debates on transcultural curating.
