Jakob Halfmann ist Nachwuchsgruppenleiter im DFG-geförderten Emmy-Noether-Projekt „The Linguistic (Pre-)History of the Indo-Iranian Frontier“. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der historischen Linguistik, sowie Sprachdokumentation und -beschreibung mit Fokus auf indo-iranischen Sprachen, insbesondere den Nuristan-Sprachen, sowie historischen und modernen iranischen und indoarischen Sprachen der Hindukusch-Region.

Darüber hinaus interessiert er sich für Pfade und Mechanismen des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen und für verschiedene weitere Sprachfamilien (insbesondere Maya-Sprachen, semitische und kaukasische Sprachen).
