First session of "Los Viernes Históricos" Colloquium with Sven Beckert, April 10th 2026

The first online session of our "Los viernes históricos" colloquium will take place on April 10th 2026, 4 p.m. We are pleased to welcome Sven Beckert as our speaker, who will present his recently published book "Capitalism: A Global History" and engage in conversation about the history of capitalism in Latin America.
Sven Beckert is Laird Bell Professor of History at Harvard University. His research centers on the history of the United States in the nineteenth century, especially on the history of capitalism in its economic, social, political, and global dimensions. He is co-editor of the book series America in the World at Princeton University Press and co-chair of the Weatherhead Initative on Global History (WIGH). Among other books, he has published "The Monied Metropolis: New York City and the Consolidation of the American Bourgeoisie, 1850-1986" and the award-winning book "Empire of Cotton: A Global History".
"Los viernes históricos" is a digital colloquium that discusses the intersection of global history and the history of Latin America. Right now, the convener group consists of 12 international scholars that combine different institutional and cultural backgrounds as well as different temporal and topical specializations. Convenors include Jeremy Adelman, Rossana Barragán, Martín Bergel, Paulo Drinot, Brodwyn Fischer, Michael Goebel, Pilar González-Bernaldo, Marixa Lasso, Adrián Lerner, Paula López Caballero, Gabriela Pellegrino Soares, and José Ragas. This year's program runs under the title "Latin American History in New Perspectives on Global Capitalism: Actors, Concepts, and Problems of Scale". The colloquium will take place eight times a year, on the first Friday of March, April, May, June, September, October, November, and December 2026.
