As a postgraduate, Igor Sevenard studied Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Oxford as well as Sinology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg as a Bachelor's student with a stay abroad in Shanghai. He worked at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London during his master's studies, where he focused on the global aspects of the Belt and Road Initiative. His research interests include China's international relations with Russia, the EU, and Africa, as well as the influence of status and identity of states in their dealings with each other. Since October 2021, he has been a research associate (Praedoc) in the project "A Translingual Conceptual History of Chinese Worlds" at Freie Universität Berlin.

In the framework of the Joint Center for Advanced Studies "Worldmaking from a Global Perspective: A Dialogue with China", Igor Sevenard investigates on the topic “The formation of a global "community of common destiny" - A Conceptualization of Chinese Worldmaking”. The research project examines the Chinese concept of the community of common destiny (人类命运共同体 rénlèi mìngyùn gòngtóngtǐ), which has been proclaimed a popular goal for international relations especially under Xi Jinping. It will be explored how the concept and its individual components have been historically begotten, as well as what connections and ruptures there are with Tianxia. Furthermore, field research on the African continent will be used to show how the concept generates imaginary worlds on the ground, but also how the concept is in constant change via local agency.
