The Department of History and Civilization at the European University
Institute (EUI) invites applications for a four year doctoral programme
in History and Civilization (closing date for applications: 31.01.2015).
Grants and tuition fees for PhD candidates are covered by the national
grant-awarding authority.

- A truly European institution for post-graduate studies in history for
the early modern and modern period
- European research focus, cosmopolitan ambiance, cultural diversity
- Most activities conducted in English, with multilingualism also
encouraged
- Focus on the history of Europe in a comparative, transnational and
global perspective
- Four-year fully funded Ph.D. grants
- Exchange programmes with major European, U.S.A. and Russian
universities
- First-class library
- Historical Archives of the European Union

The Department of History and Civilization (HEC) of the European
University Institute offers a distinctive programme of transnational and
comparative European history. Our central concerns are the interlinking
of European societies since the Renaissance and the complex cultural and
political legacies that have shaped contemporary Europe. HEC is equally
committed to exploring the place of Europe in the world through the
study of empires, global processes and international institutions. The
Department distinguishes itself as a place where different
historiographical and methodological approaches meet.

The rich variety of research approaches and themes, as well as the broad
international background of its professors and visiting scholars,
together form a vibrant intellectual community.

Doctoral researchers have a unique chance to engage with the full range
of historical research in Europe. In the first year of the programme,
researchers start their PhD project and attend seminars that explore
methodological questions and different areas of historical research.
They also develop their academic writing and presentation skills, and
can study foreign languages.

The Department funds research trips to work in archives and libraries
across Europe and beyond. A first-class library, extensive computing
facilities, a career center, language courses, and a large community of
post-docs make the EUI an excellent environment to do a PhD in history.

Each year around 30 citizens of different EU member states, Norway,
Switzerland, and a small number from other countries, are admitted to
the PhD programme in History and Civilization of the European University
Institute. All doctoral researchers receive a grant from their national
governments for a period of three years, and the Institute provides
funding for the fourth year.
