Die Unterrichtssprache ist Englisch. Kenntnisse des Hocharabischen (Modern Standard Arabic) sind erforderlich, da die Lektüre aus literarischen Texten auf Arabisch besteht.

This course aims to explore the concept and practices of comparison in Islam. The idea and method of comparison have a long history in Arabic and Islamic sciences and literature. First, the introductory sessions of this course offer an overview of comparative scholarship, exploring its history, context, and critiques of the comparative method itself. Second, the focus will shift to various concepts and the grounds often used to justify comparativism in Islam. This includes revisiting the debates on the unity and diversity of Islam. Third, the course addresses the question of whether literature is secular. Fourth, it introduces students to recent trends in comparative analysis of Islamic(ate) literature, societies, and culture.

This course will be valuable for students of Arabic literature, Islamic studies, and Middle Eastern studies interested in researching the diversity of Islamic societies, literatures, and cultures.
