This interactive presentation explores Maltese as a unique European language with deep Arabic roots. Through historical context, linguistic examples, the oldest known Maltese poem, popular proverbs, and basic greetings, participants will discover how Maltese reflects centuries of cultural contact across the Mediterranean. The presentation is held in two subsequent sessions on May 20 and May 27, 2026.

Prof. Kurstin Gatt is Senior Lecturer in Arabic Studies at the University of Malta; he also is the Coordinator of the Arabic Programmes.
