Part of the series Panorama Text: Maschinelle Erfassung, Verarbeitung und Kontextualisierung von geschriebener Sprache für die Geisteswissenschaften, FUB-IT. The workshop may be attended independently of other events in the series.
Arabic Studies×NLP: Sprache, Macht und Methode provides an introduction to fundamental methods of natural language processing (NLP) for Arabic texts. Joudy Sido Bozan then discusses those in relation to research questions from the fields of Arabic Studies and the Digital Humanities.
The workshop focuses on both the technical approaches (e.g., tokenization, annotation, and automatic analysis) and their contextualization and critical reflection within the discipline. Common challenges such as ambiguity, diglossia, dialect diversity, and orthographic variation are being demonstrated based on contemporary and historical Arabic texts. The aim of this workshop is to discuss NLP not only as a technical functionality but also in means of methodological and epistemic challenges for research in the humanities.
This event will be held in English.
