The religious tradition of Islam has always maintained a very specific approach to the Quranic revelation as a text ancored in history. It did so even when dealing with the texts relevance for juristic decisions: On the one hand, memories of the historical setting of the revelatory events had to be kept alive, as they were indispensable for the interpretation of the Quran. On the other hand, this must never imply that the future importance of the document were called into question in more general terms. It is possible to reconstruct various facets of the controversies about this issue, which shed new light on the characteristics of Islamic legal discourse.
