Prehistoric Archaeology i.e. Prehistory is studying that part of the past of mankind which is not covered by written records focussing on ancient societies, their artefacts, monuments and culture.

The focus of the institute at Berlin is on the Neolithic of Central and South-Eastern Europe, the Bronze Age of the Eastern European plain and the Iron Age of Central Europe.

The study of Prehistory at Freie Universität in Berlin involves excavations and surveys of archaeological sites in Europe dating from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages.
