Vortrag: Rising Above the Ordinary: Justice, Virtue, and Normative Action in the Chinese Countryside

31.05.2018 | 12:00

Susanne Brandtstädter (Köln)

The talk explores phenomena of normative change in China by focusing on the political dynamics of justice, virtue and political action. Its ethnographic backdrop are the moral arguments, discursive strategies, and legal activities of a groups of so-called ‘barefoot lawyers’, legal councilors and political activists of rural extraction from north-eastern China who have no formal education and no law degree. The talk will widely draw on my readings of Chinese history and philosophy, but the points I wish to make are rooted in fieldwork encounters with these peasant lawyers between 2006 and 2012.”
