Japanese prints and current special exhibitions, research colloquium (Colloquium Forschungspraxis),

The workshop will focus on the rather unique phenomenon of the Japanese print, how it is born, grows up and becomes a commodity for all – that is from the lower samurai class to the high lower-class inhabitants of Edo. It will address themes such as how they can tell us more about everyday life in Edo, serve as a pictorial history of the changing taste among the people of Edo, and how the designers adapt or fail to adapt to changes in taste. What is tradition and what is innovation, and how to distinguish between a good print and a bad one. The aim is to develop connoisseurship among the students by looking at the real thing.
For preparation look carefully at all the plates in Ukiyoe taikei, volumes 1–12, Tokyo: Shūseisha.
Anmeldung
Der Workshop richtet sich an StudentInnen der Ostasiatischen Kunstgeschichte im Masterstudiengang bzw. Bachelor-Studiengang in der Vertiefungsphase. Bei Interesse schicken Sie bitte bis Montag, 22.04.2012 ein halbseitiges Motivationsschreiben in Englisch an wibke.voss@fu-berlin.de. Geben Sie hierbei auch Ihre Fächerkombination und Sprachkenntnisse (Englisch, Japanisch) an. Der Workshop findet in englischer Sprache vor Originalen des Museums für Asiatische Kunst Berlin statt.
