A series of five German-Israeli summer schools
on selected topics of pre-modern Islamic studies
funded by the Einstein-Foundation (Berlin)
Summary and vision
The discipline of Islamic studies has developed dramatically over the last generation in a number of realms. In these fields the role of German and Israel scholars has been important and in some cases critical, building on a long academic tradition while adopting and developing interesting and innovative methodologies and areas of research and teaching. Still, there are many areas that need to be developed, and likewise others that need to be renewed with the recent and approaching retirement of senior colleagues. In order to better prepare the new generation of scholars in our two countries, we are executing a series of Summer Schools for advanced students. While the basis of this project are the departments of Islamic Studies at the Hebrew University and the Freie Universität, it is also be open to students and teachers from other universities in Israel and Germany.
Over the next five years, we will bring together 24 students from the two universities for annual Summer Schools that will focus on selected topics of Islamic Studies during the pre-modern period. “Islamic Studies” is meant here in the widest sense – the discipline touches upon and flows into Arabic Studies and includes the contact with other religious and cultural traditions in the region and beyond; history, religious studies, phy, linguistics, art history, archeology and literature can fall within the framework of Islamic studies. Interdisciplinarity and diversity as regards methodology, topics and viewpoints as well as disparity of the types of sources is thus an integral element of each of the five Schools.
One of the long-term goals behind the series of Schools is the laying of firm foundations for later collaborative projects among the participants (especially in case of doctoral students).
